Maintaining healthy teeth and gums is an essential part of keeping up with your overall health. Unfortunately, many people find themselves neglecting their responsibility to take care of their teeth. To help his patients better understand the importance of keeping up with a daily oral health routine, Dr. Southall offers some helpful tips for his patients to follow.

To start, it is very important for patients to brush their teeth at least twice per day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. This will significantly help to improve the health of your teeth and gums. When you choose a toothbrush, make sure that the size and shape of the brush allows you to reach all areas of your mouth easily. You may also decide to purchase an electric toothbrush. These generally come with a built-in timer that helps make sure you brush your teeth for the necessary amount of time. You should remember to replace your toothbrush every three to four months to ensure that the bristles do not become too worn-down.

It is also essential that you floss daily to remove plaque from between your teeth. Your toothbrush is unable to reach these areas and plaque will build up there if left untreated. Daily flossing can help you prevent gum disease and dental decay.

Dr. Southall also encourages his patients to visit his office at least twice per year for regular cleanings and checkups. By combining at-home care with in-office care from your dentist, you can ensure that your smile remains healthy and bright in the future.
